Thursday 3/4/10 - "CONVERSATIONS"

"CONVERSATIONS"

Tuesday night Father Fred led the first of three Lenten services titled "Conversations with Father Fred". Father Fred says mass in our church once a week and his spirituality fills that beautiful place to overflowing.

Our evenings with Father Fred will be conversations about the sacraments. This week we talked about the sacraments of initiation; Baptism, Confirmation, and Eucharist. Steve and I were asked to present the gifts, bringing the bread and wine to the altar. It was a lovely honor and I was happy. It was also a blessing I will cherish that he and I were in church together - sitting together. Just before the mass ended, the prayer I posted yesterday appeared in my mind. One moment I was totally involved with what was happening in the sanctuary and then like a sudden breeze the spirit placed the prayer in me.

Next week our conversation will be about the healing sacraments; the Sacrament of the Sick (anointing with oil) and the Sacrament of Reconciliation. If anyone reading this would like me to specifically take them in my heart to this healing service next Tuesday, let me know here or in an email.

The following appeared at the end of the insert to the weekly church bulletin;
In keeping with our Lenten theme: Give up, Give in, Give back, "Let the spirit of God open your hearts to hear every word God speaks in your midst in the days ahead." I say, "Amen".

The following came to me a different way. They are things I heard in an Al-Anon meeting.

Just because I am invited to a fight, I don't have to attend - not physically, mentally or emotionally.

God is my doctor, Al-Anon is my medicine.

Love and prayers,
Prayer Girl

Sunday 12/13/09 - "SO GRATEFUL..."

"SO GRATEFUL...."

I am so grateful for many things today.

I am grateful that I believe if something is happening, it IS GOD'S WILL. This is true whether I like or dislike what is happening.

I know that in the fullness of time God's Will - will be done in my life. I made a decision to leave my will and my life in God's hands.

I bought an artificial Christmas tree last year. It is easy to put up and already has lights on it. I put it up in less than an hour this afternoon. Daughter and I decorated it with her decorations and her very artistic direction. It looks quite beautiful. It is very different from the way I have decorated our tree for 40+ years, but I love it.

The three of us - hubby, daughter, and I had dinner at Perkins. I had the chicken pot pie and it was delicious. It was the perfect choice - nice comfort food for a wonderful day.

I got to the gym for a good workout this morning and then went to one of my favorite Alcoholics Anonymous meetings, a women's noon meeting. As always, it delivered a huge dose of spirituality. I sat next to daughter and her sponsor sat at the end of the large table. I know most of the women at this meeting and it feels so like home, comfortable.

I am looking forward to my home group Al-Anon meeting tomorrow morning followed by two separate meetings with two sponsees.

I am "in the moment" today and that makes me very happy. If I just stay in this place, I will remain peaceful in my mind and spirit.

I found today that I had two new followers of my blog. What a joy that is for me. It may seem like a simple thing, but it makes me very happy.

I will be meeting up with a blogger from "over the pond" in February and I am excited today at the prospect of meeting her then.

I slept well last night and had a short nap this afternoon - all of which my body appreciates.

I am grateful for my blogger friends.

Saturday 8/1/09 - "NOW I LAY ME"

"NOW I LAY ME DOWN TO SLEEP"

Now I lay me down to sleep,
I pray the Lord my soul to keep;
Bless and watch me through the night,
And wake me with the morning light.

Now I lay my self-will down
And ask dear God, please keep me sound
In body and soul, in spirit and mind
May all these parts become aligned.

"NOW I LAY MY OWN LIFE DOWN"

Now I lay my own life down
To help the lost who now may drown
In that sadness sea that drink creates
My heart your outstretched hand awaits

Thursday, 5/28/09 - "GOOD-BYE MY FRIEND"

"GOOD-BYE MY FRIEND"

Initially my blog for Thursday was going to be:

"ON SABBATICAL"

I sat with that idea for 24 hours and by the time this morning arrived, I ditched that thought.

So....today's blog is about my close to 6 years sober in Alcoholics Anonymous sponsee who is moving very far away next Tuesday. (I mentioned her moving a few weeks ago.)

Last Saturday there was a 'going away' party for her with lots of friends, food, fun, photos, and tears. I had someone take some pictures with my camera with a gift in mind. I didn't take a gift or card to the party as I knew I would be seeing her solo the following Monday.

I found a picture of her and me, arms around each other, smiling in the sunshine of a back yard covered with green bushes and trees all around us. I found a two part frame and placed our picture in one section and a poem I wrote her in the other.

This is the poem:

GOOD-BYE MY FRIEND
There'll always be a special place

Tucked gently down inside

Where I can touch and see your face

Your memory close, right by my side

I'll feel the radiance of your smile

Feel the power of your eyes

I will sit with these for just a while -
For moments - then I'll say good-bye

God has laid a piece of you in me
And I in you, I'm sure

And with these gifts we'll always see

Our spirits shared and pure

Never forget just who you are
A gentle, peaceful, God-like soul
Let nothing come inside and mar

God's gift of love that makes you whole

Life will be different without her. I will miss her dearly. I will try not to cry. I'm not against tears at all, but I've shed so many in my life - I just really don't want to cry this time.

I am giving myself a birthday present tomorrow. I'm going to another 11th step spiritual retreat over the weekend. This time I'm going with my sponsor. I am so excited to be able to spend some quality time with her. I pray God blesses her, me, and the weekend.

Bye for now and God bless.

Thursday, 5/14/09 - "MY SPIRITUAL RX"

"MY SPIRITUAL RX"

I have described in past blogs my first personal encounter with a priest. I asked for guidance when I discovered my gift of "healing touch". After a discussion with him that lasted about 45 minutes, he told me something that summarized everything I needed to know to help me deal with things I did not understand.

He gave me what I call "MY SPIRITUAL RX". It helps me see things I don't understand in different ways and it gives me lots of hope in what seem like hopeless situations.

This is "MY SPIRITUAL RX":
1. It's not about me.

2. God has His purposes.
3. Don't limit God.

I can't count the number of times in my life I have asked the question, "Why?" I have not understood why things turned out as they did or why I made the choices that I made.
Why did this happen? Why did that happen?

Looking back from the vantage point of almost 25 years in Alcoholics Anonymous and 4 1/2 years in Al-Anon, I find the Spiritual Rx given me has helped me better understand my past and the present. More often, it has helped me to not have to understand.

Throughout my life I have had questions like:
Why did my first marriage end in divorce?
Why did my first husband end up an alcoholic?
Why did I end up an alcoholic?
Why did I ditch my Masters' degree program in favor of marriage?
Why did I have to suffer from depression such a large portion of my life?
Why did I suffer post-postpartum depression after the birth of both of my children and never knew it till many, many years later. (and therefore went untreated)
Many other questions.

Today, I have some answers to some of these questions, but more importantly, I find that the answers to most of the questions don't matter. I have come to believe that my life has unfolded exactly as it was supposed to.

I know that God has His purposes in all that happens and it is not necessary I understand them. When I get too involved analyzing, second-guessing, and playing God, I tend to mess things up.

When I just allow God's plans to unfold and I cooperate, God's power and His will are limitless. I can watch life happen and marvel at God's work and feel at peace that He has chosen to use me in some small measure.

I find peace when I realize that:
It's not about me,
God has His purposes.
I don't have to limit God.

I believe this "SPIRITUAL RX" is for all of us.
You too!

Wednesday, 5/6/09 - "FEED ME, FEED ME!"

"FEED ME, FEED ME!"

When I woke up this morning, I asked God to feed me - to fill me up with His healing and loving spirit. He did. He fed me - mind, body, and spirit.

I put my feet in gear and my scooter in motion and went to an Al-Anon meeting. The topic was forgiveness. There is such healing in the act of forgiving. There was a lot of discussion and people were in all kinds of different places...some were at the place where they are not able to forgive (yet) because they believe it is the same as condoning the wrongs done to them. Others were just beginning to discover the good that comes from forgiving.

For myself, I have come to recognize that not forgiving is a poison that seeps through my whole self, an acid that burns into and destroys my soul. I understand today that most, if not all, of the people I have forgiven were sick, not bad people. When I do not forgive, I hurt only myself. I am willing to do whatever it takes to forgive. This meeting fed my spirit.

I forced myself to return to the gym today and complete my exercise routine. I tried to eat in a healthy manner. I even took a short nap. All these activities fed my body.

I spent time reading blogs, thinking about them, and commenting as well as writing this one. I listened to several sponsees describe problems they were having and tried to provide some support and guidance. These things fed my mind.

Tonight I can say I was fed - I feel well-nourished, satisfied, balanced, and at one with myself, my God, and my fellow man.

It
feels wonderful to be in this "good space" at this moment.

I share it with you,

Monday, 5/4/09 - "A VERY SHORT BLOG"

(AIM FOR GREATER HEIGHTS)

"A VERY SHORT BLOG"

"Home again, home again, jiggity-jog!"

We're back home after our wonderful, intense, spiritual, beautiful weekend. I am tired from the pace of the jam-packed event filled conference and the trip home, but I am so very happy and renewed.

I have returned with a belief that with God's help and guidance I will be able to "AIM FOR GREATER HEIGHTS"! I do not know what those "greater heights" will look like, but I believe they are there. I also believe they are attainable if I leave all the planning and execution to God and don't try to push Him aside and take over myself.

I also return with a desire to recommit myself to making time to be in "the silence" regularly, for it is there that I hear Him best.

This blog is truly a very short one,
but hopefully, sweet as well,

Sunday, 4/26/09 - "LOOKING BACK"

"LOOKING BACK"

Sometimes things happen that you just know are 'God's will', even though they represent a huge change that will take a lot of adjusting to and will undoubtedly cause some pain of loss. One such moment is in the process of happening.

A dear, sweet girl, Zoe, who I have known and sponsored for more than a few years is moving. I met her at the first Alcoholics Anonymous meeting she attended after she got out of a local treatment program.
I have had the privilege and honor to sponsor Zoe and watch God transform an emotional, mental, physical, and spiritual wreck into a woman of dignity and beauty.

She has met and successfully dealt with one challenge after another in those years. The years I have known her amount to a decent chunk of time yet feels in this moment like the length of time it would take me to inhale and blow out a quick breath of air.

I remember that very first meeting when this girl ended up sitting next to me. (There are no mistakes in God's world.) She was frightened, nervous - her leg swinging back and forth in constant rhythmic motion. Her eyes were cast down toward the floor and she looked ready to bolt and run, but I could tell that she was firmly resolved to stay in her seat for that entire hour.

She had been told by the counselor at the local treatment center that she needed to get a sponsor. A guy at this meeting who knew she just got out of treatment, had seen her at one of the meetings they hold at the center, and may have had a thought in his head to "hit on her", came up at the end of the meeting to remind her to get a sponsor. BUT I had already seen the need this girl had, reached out my hand to her including my phone number, and like a mother bird - sent this guy "packing" with a few simple words - kind but direct.

In our Big Book, "Alcoholics Anonymous", there is a portion read at almost every meeting I've ever gone to from, "How it Works", p. 58 that goes like this:

"There are those, too, who suffer from grave emotional and mental disorders, but many of them do recovery if they have the capacity to be honest."

I always thought I was one of those people, but over the years have come to realize I'm luckier than those I believe this statement is talking about. Zoe is one of these people referred to in this sentence. She fights for sobriety and soundness of mind on many fronts.

Thank God she has the capacity to be honest. It has been a difficult struggle to maintain that honesty, her sobriety and her mental health, but she is succeeding. She has no idea how far she has actually come and that is part of the reason I am writing this. She is a miracle. Despite the constant challenges she faces and always will, she ultimately perseveres by applying Honesty, Open-mindedness, and Willingness and asking God and her sponsor for help.

Today she has a hand that has been trained to pick up the phone and keep her sponsor informed. She listens when I suggest more meditation and prayer or that she should make a call to her doctor. She listens when I have to say things she does not want to hear.
Moving will present large problems for her.

This move will bring many blessings to her and her family despite the challenges it presents. S
he will face the realities of having to find a new sponsor, a new doctor, new home group, new sober friends. I truly believe God's will is being worked out here and that He will not take her this far just to desert her. God will see that her needs are met.

I love Zoe with all my heart and soul. Our sponsor-sponsee relationship etched a deep groove in our lives. We were able to mutually share very private things with each other. She was also one of the first people God led me to place my hands on in a healing way. He passed healing of mind, body, and spirit to her.

I will be praying with all my might for her sobriety, mental health, and total well-being. I am reaching out to my blogging community to ask for your prayers for this beautiful soul. I ask you all to keep Zoe in your prayers.

A large change like this tends to bring up old memories, generate fears, and generally set one a little off center. This has happened to her and has provided me an opportunity to remind her that she is not the person she used to be, is certainly not the person I met at that first meeting, and that she lives a totally different life today.

Thanks for keeping her in your prayers along side of mine.

Wednesday, 4/22/09 - "GRATEFUL"

(Photo credit: Lettuce Head by Donna Eaton - I'm just hanging out with lettuce head!)

"GRATEFUL"

I attended an Al-Anon meeting today. It is a discussion meeting based on an Al-Anon book "Opening our Hearts Transforming our Losses". The girl who led the meeting celebrated 6 years in the program today and she chose the topic "GRATITUDE", from pages 170 - 172.

This is an excerpt (p. 171) from the reading:

"How do we practice gratitude? Some members have found it helpful to write a gratitude list on a regular basis. Others have developed a daily practice of saying thank you for small things, even for difficult moments and what they have to teach us. We learn to trust that we are exactly where we are supposed to be at this very moment. Pain and joy often coexist side by side. Gratitude is not about ignoring life's problems and difficulties. Rather, it's about recognizing that life isn't all or nothing."

For me:
I am grateful that when I am sad or feel grief, I don't have to run from those feelings. I can move through them and I have the tools of the program to help me do this.

I am grateful for the tools of Alcoholics Anonymous and of Al-Anon and my ability to use them. I use prayers - the serenity prayer and calling out to God for help as well as the phone to call my sponsor and other program friends. I can use the steps to remember my powerlessness, to turn my will and my life over to the care of God, or to make amends. I can utilize the slogans and "Let Go and Let God", put "First Things First", remember that "There but for the Grace of God Go I", and I can "Keep it Simple".

I am grateful that I have learned how to calm myself, to find serenity and peace of mind in the middle of upset.

I am so grateful that I can enter an AA or Al-Anon meeting and find myself in the midst of friends, be they people I know or total strangers, and find myself speaking a common language with them.

I am grateful that in AA and Al-Anon meetings I feel safe and have developed a sense of trust.

I am grateful for the journey God has led me on so far and I trust His future guidance.

I am grateful for my recovery and the spiritual connection it has created.

I am grateful that God is holding me and those I love in His hands.

I am grateful for the power of prayer.

Monday, 4/20/09 - "WHERE'S PRAYER GIRL?"

(Riding safely on the back of her Higher Power!)

"WHERE'S PRAYER GIRL?

Remember the books, puzzles, and games titled "WHERE'S WALDO?" and you had to hunt for where the character, Waldo, was hiding?

The question now is "WHERE'S PRAYER GIRL?

This is where PRAYER GIRL is:

Prayer Girl did something really wrong when she worked out at the gym Saturday and on Sunday she experienced a lot of trouble with her lower back. Double Aleve finally helped in the afternoon and she waited to take more before bed.

Monday is hospital volunteer day and usually a work-out after that, but not this week.

Prayer Girl will volunteer, but no exercising. She needs to give her back a longer rest.

PG met with her book club friends Sunday. They read a book by a local author, Diane Ketcham, "The Vanishing A-List". It was a really good read. PG is very picky and if a book doesn't grab her right away, she's apt to never finish it. PG finished this book and thoroughly enjoyed it. It was interesting to hear the author talk about how she wrote it, got it published, and promotes it.

PG was so happy to have been able to write a poem Saturday, "The Smile". Writing poetry is like giving birth to a piece of the soul.

Prayer Girl is also happy that she is doing a little better with her eating habits. She has been able to enjoy foods she likes, but a little less of them. She's counting calories. It took a week or two to get used to it, but she's in a groove and it's getting easier.

Prayer Girl got to ride her scooter to her home group Al-Anon meeting Sunday morning when the day was sunny and the air crisp and clear. She was able to give her sponsor a little Al-Anon anniversary gift (sponsor celebrated her 34th Al-Anon anniversary), meet with a sponsee, and later bike to the book club, and after that meet hubby for dinner out. All much fun - a glorious Sunday!

Saturday, 4/18/09 - "POSITIVE POSSIBILITIES"

(Positively joyful!)

"POSITIVE POSSIBILITIES"

I attended my Friday Al-Anon 11th Step Meditation meeting today. Following are a few excerpts from the reading we meditated on from, "Having Had a Spiritual Awakening", p. 50.

"I am not a body with a spirit, I am a spirit living in a body."

"...sees the deeper reality of my spiritual progress -
a desire to express compassion and love in daily life."

"How has my Al-Anon experience with the God
of my understanding
helped me express
love and caring in other areas of my life?"

This was such a spiritual meeting. What I took away from it was a tremendous sense of the POSITIVE POSSIBILITIES that life offers. The degree to which I practice spiritual principles determines how positive my life will be.

These are some of the spiritual actions I try to practice regularly to help create "Positive Possibilities":

  • Using affirmations
  • Acknowledging problems and focusing on solutions
  • Using the power of prayer
  • Providing positive words of encouragement to myself and others
  • Recognizing God in all things
  • Bringing God into every interaction with others
  • Asking God and allowing Him to express Himself in what I think, say, and do
  • Giving the glory and honor to God
  • Being sensitive to knowing when a newcomer is in the room when they have not identified themselves
  • Reaching out to the newcomer
  • Encouraging the newcomer and the old timer in trouble
  • Living the 12 steps
  • Having compassion for struggling alcoholics and Al-Anoners
  • Having compassion for those who have succumbed to the disease of alcoholism
  • Being grateful

Monday, 4/13/09 - "IMAGES OF EASTER"

"IMAGES OF EASTER"

Thoughts about Easter and what it means to me!
  • Easter is resurrection - victory over death - eternal life - renewal - rebirth
  • Easter is joy, love, hope, faith
  • Easter is forgiving and being forgiven
  • Easter is Springtime - flowering shrubs, trees, flowers, grass, all things new
  • I think of green, pink, yellow, blue, lavender, purple, beautiful vibrant colors, a riot of rich color
  • Easter is the mystery and excitement of little ones running all over hunting Easter eggs.
  • I remember all the work that Easter entailed - boiling eggs, coloring the eggs, shopping for fun things I hid in plastic eggs, preparing and hiding baskets so as not to be found till after church on Easter, planning an Easter meal, hiding eggs inside and out, hunting those eggs and baskets, and eating a family meal together. Now the children are all grown up and not here this Easter, but I am so very glad I went the extra mile and extra expenditure of energy then to create fun and beautiful memories for me and my children now. It was worth every moment.
  • Easter cannot come and go without my thinking of my parents - most often they were with us for Easter. They are celebrating in heaven these days and I say, "Happy Easter Mom and Dad".
  • When I think of Easter with its rebirth, forgiveness, faith, hope, love, and joy I can't help but think of how grateful I am to God for bringing me to Alcoholics Anonymous and allowing me to experience a rebirth of my own - a wonderful blessing that continues every Easter - every day.
  • At the close of this Easter day, I reach out with special prayers and love to my blogger friends. Hope your weekend was a glorious one.

Sunday, 4/12/09 - "ON MY MIND"

(Easter Vigil Mass)

"ON MY MIND"

This is what is on my mind tonight:

The Easter Vigil mass is in progress at my church at this very moment. At this time last year, I was participating in this beautiful and holy service as I became a member of the Catholic faith. My daughter, friends, and husband were all there. I will never forget the darkness in the church as we entered with our lighted candles and proceeded down the aisle to our seats. It was a very long and solemn occasion full of God's magnificent spirit.

Tomorrow morning will be Easter and my mind is full of reminiscences of many Easters past. My parents are gone and my children will be together in Tampa this year. Easters past most often included their presence, lots of hidden eggs, candy, presents, Easter baskets, flowers, colorful clothes, church service, and an Easter meal. I miss those times, but am very happy that I have such wonderful memories.

On my mind is a girl Steveroni and I visited in the hospital this evening. "B" is a lovely girl who is a devoted member of Alcoholics Anonymous. She has just been told she has an operable brain tumor and there is also something wrong in her stomach area that they are still trying to diagnose. I was given the spiritual opportunity to place my hands on her. That is a gift from God to me. I pray that God will grace this girl with His loving, healing power.

I'm thinking about what a glorious day it has been and how grateful I am. I was able to ride my scooter everywhere - to the grocery, to Starbucks, to a Woman's Noon AA meeting. Later it was still sunny with a little breeze and I biked down to the gym for a workout. Hubby and I biked to Olive Garden for a delicious meal and then to the hospital to see our friend. The ride back home at dusk was refreshing. A day to remember.

On my mind was the need to write this blog. That is no longer on my mind. It's done.

You, my blogger friends are also on my mind. I'm thinking of those of you who are trudging through difficult times and I am sending my support, love, and prayers as you move to a better place. I have been where you are and am living proof that these things pass. For those of you who are in a good place, I glory with you in your happy moments.

HAPPY EASTER TO YOU ALL!

Love and prayers to all

Friday, 4/10/09 - "BROKEN MAN"

"BROKEN MAN"

"I can never know what shaped him into the
person he became,
yet I am grateful to Al-Anon,
where I learned to replace condemnation with compassion."

- From "Hope For Today", April 9, p. 100

BROKEN MAN
Here now stands a broken man - a shell
With countless years strewn wide behind

Of broken vows, banished hopes - he fell

Searching, seeking promise of a better place

- For just another drop his soul he'd sell

Ears ring - he hears an angel's bell

But too much to see, too much to bear

He languishes locked inside his self-made Hell

Yet deep inside that man's thin husk

Dwells the God of all who can make him well

God's eyes weep, His heart breaks

He'd give His life for this man's sake

And He did!

Thursday, 4/9/09 - "SLEEP ELUDES ME"

"SLEEP ELUDES ME"

Sleep eludes me
Now - in the deepest part of night

Thoughts are flashing
Though I try with all my might

To tuck them in for good

And close the curtains of my sight

Sleep evades me

In this solitude of midnight

Where emotions fly about

Sparking thoughts like brilliant light

And my brain just cannot close
No shuttered mind this night

Sleep escapes me

In the silence of this night

But God is here

Gently whispering goodnight

Speaking in the stillness

Saying everything's alright

Thursday, 4/2/09 - "YOU ARE NOT ALONE"

"YOU ARE NOT ALONE"

There is a sign over the door as you walk into the 24 hour AA club in our town. It reads:

YOU ARE NOT ALONE

What a comfort, what a miracle,
what hope, what a wonderful thing.

When I first walked through the doors of that AA club, I was totally and completely alone, lost in the hopelessness of a disease I did not know I had and did not understand in any way.
I was so alone and so lost that I did not even see that sign hanging above my head. Well, my head was cast down and all I was able to see was my feet, the floor, the dirt on that floor. (I felt like that dirt I saw.) That was my life at that moment.

Very soon, however, I came to know that I was truly not alone. At my very first meeting, I identified myself as a newcomer, and the women in that women's meeting spoke to me. (I understood nothing they said, but I felt the caring or I would never have come back.) They also gave me phone numbers.

From that very first meeting I was not alone although it was a while before I understood this and was able to tentatively reach out for help to those women who reached out immediately to me. A few months later I asked a woman I met at that first meeting to help me stop drinking. She did, it worked, and she became my first sponsor.

As the years have passed, my sense of never being alone has grown stronger and stronger. I have discovered the deep spiritual connections that exist between myself and the sponsors I have had, much later between myself and those I sponsor, and with many friends in recovery.

I feel "at home" no matter what meeting I attend.
I have walked completely alone into meetings in strange cities where I knew no one at all and in every case have found the same welcome I experienced when I walked into that first meeting. I am truly never alone.

Not only am I never alone, but the people I find also understand me. That adds a dimension to my relationships with other recovering people that is as necessary as breathing for me. I need people who speak the same language - the "Language of the Heart" - the language of recovery.

Thank God for Alcoholics Anonymous and my never having to be alone again - ever - anymore.

Wednesday, 4/1/09 - "DISCOVERED TRUTHS"

"DISCOVERED TRUTHS"

"All truths are easy to understand once they are discovered; the point is to discover them." - Galileo Galilei

Thank God I found Alcoholics Anonymous and Al-Anon. They have led me to the discovery of truths that had eluded me all my life despite searching everywhere I could think to look. They are quite simple.

These are some of the truths I have discovered. With these discoveries have come a life that makes sense, is easier to live, and is so much sweeter.

It is true that alcoholism is a disease.

It is true that (like it or not) I am an alcoholic. (Today, I like it!)

It is true that I am powerless over alcohol and my life is unmanageable.

It is true that I (yes, I) have many character defects such as perfectionism, people-pleasing, worry, and fear.

It is true that, on my own, I can do nothing about these character defects.

It is true that I need a power greater than myself, God, to be able to surrender.

It is true that I need God to guide my life.

It is true that I need God to remove my shortcomings.

It is true that the depths of my relationship with God are limitless.

It is true that prayer and meditation allow me to connect with God.

It is true that God wants what is best for me.

It is true that I often do not know what is best for me.

It is true that prayer is very powerful.

It is true that prayers are always answered - sometimes yes, sometimes no, sometimes not yet!

It is true that life is a gift.

It is true that life is beautiful.

It is true that many of these things are true as long as I am looking through the eyes of a positive attitude.

It is true that attitude is everything.

It is true that we have choices and our choices always have consequences.

It is true that we can learn from poor choices as well as good choices.

It is true that we are not alone.

It is true that I have loving family, friends, sponsees, sponsor, and blogging friends.

It is true that miracles of healing happen.

It is true that working and living the twelve steps changes lives.

It is true that the twelve steps have changed my life.

It is true that an attitude of gratitude is a perfect prescription to eliminate negativity.

It is true that peace of mind and serenity are priceless.

It is true that this list could go on into eternity and needs to end for now.

Tuesday, 3/31/09 - DAY AND NIGHT AND IN BETWEEN

"DAY AND NIGHT
AND IN BETWEEN"

Deepest dark, the night's arrived the day to bind
With purest, sweetest, celestial resounding sounds
That touch the ear and gently quiet the mind

Those heavenly notes from infinity to Earth rebound

But here peeps the light at daybreak now
Coolness of night transforms to daylight heat
Warmth blooms again as first light allows

The day moves on - increasing light so sweet

I seek the space just there between
In the mystic moment on the brink
Where all is calm and all serene

Day and night and sound and sense are linked

Friday, 3/27/09 - "DOES IT WORK?"

"DOES IT WORK?"

"....an utterly simple and universally applicable test for Truth. It is a test that any man or woman of any kind, anywhere, can easily apply for himself. It is as simple and direct as the acid test for gold. It is the simple question -
DOES IT WORK? This test is so staggeringly simple that most clever people have passed it over as not worth considering, forgetting that all the great elemental things of life are simple."
(From: "The Sermon on the Mount" by Emmet Fox, p. 132-133)

When I first arrived at the doors of Alcoholics Anonymous, nothing was simple for me. I was in such chaos, confusion, and pain that I was desperate to find a solution. I had tried many other solutions to no avail (churches, ministers, psychiatrists, counselors, doctors, medications, etc.). I simply could not stop drinking. Once I finally did stop drinking (through the help of a sponsor in AA), I discovered I needed a solution to the overwhelming difficulties of "living".

I have had many desperate people beg me for reassurance that there is a way out of the pitiful and incomprehensible demoralization they find themselves in - both in AA and Al-Anon. The only reason I am able to offer any reassurance is because I have asked myself the question -
DOES IT WORK? (AA and Al-Anon) - and have been able to answer, YES!

People often then move beyond the simple DOES IT WORK? YES! to complicating it and asking HOW? But luckily, the program has provided answers to this too. The simplest of answers is:

H - Honesty

O - Open-mindedness
W - Willingness

If we have a willingness to be as honest as we can be, follow the program laid out before us, and have even the smallest amount of open-mindedness, then God can enter into the narrowest of places within us, and create the necessary
CHANGE.

The change comes about one-day-at-a-time, one step at a time, slowly - with patience, persistence, and hope. At first, I had very little of that, my hope came from other members of AA and Al-Anon who had found the solution before me and had enough hope and faith to share. They supported and guided me till I found my own.

Today, I share this hope, belief, faith, and trust with those who have not yet found their own and with those who, like all of us, have our 'step backward' days.

I have had enough chaos, stress, conflict, desperation, anger, misunderstanding, emotional/mental/physical pain, and confusion for this lifetime. It is easy to be overwhelmed by it all. That is why I choose to share the hope, calm, peace, serenity, emotional sobriety, health, and wholeness I have found in AA and Al-Anon.

Thank God for AA and Al-Anon, for other recovering people I see face to face, and for all you cherished bloggers.

Thursday, 3/26/09 - "A SECRET PLACE"

(Kolmanskop, Namibia. Kolmanskop is an abandoned diamond mine near the coast.)

"A SECRET PLACE"

These words are typed on a small square of paper and taped to my bathroom mirror:

Humility is perpetual quietness of heart.

It is to have no trouble.
It is never to be fretted or vexed, or irritable,

to wonder at nothing that is done to me,
to feel nothing that is done against me.

It is to be at rest when nobody praises me,
and when I am blamed or despised,
it is to have a blessed home in myself

where I can go in and shut the door
and kneel to my Father in secret and be at peace,

as in a deep sea of calmness,
when all around and about is seeming trouble.

(Author unknown)

Wonderful sentiments, hopes, and dreams.....to never be fretted, vexed, or irritable....to be at peace even when being blamed or unrecognized by others. How are these things possible?

How beautiful to be able to go into myself, shut the mental door, and be at peace with God deep inside. This takes faith and trust and a willingness to suspend useless and detrimental old behaviors in the face of adversity, behaviors such as angry words, using the 'silent treatment', resorting to self-destructive behaviors like overeating, binge shopping, not sleeping. Instead of resorting to these behaviors, to stay quiet and pray.

A SECRET PLACE

Hidden recess in my mind

Filled with light and warmth and love

There glows a place entirely calm

Acceptance, trust, and faith I find

All knowing, understanding deep in there

Expands the sense of peace - - surrounds

Echoes in the heartbeat all around
God shares his proof of total care
